WordPress Website Maintenance: A Business Checklist
Akany Insights · 20 October 2026
WordPress website maintenance should help your business keep taking enquiries. A site can look fine while a form stops sending, a renewal is missed or an old phone number stays in the footer. Build maintenance around the customer journey as well as the software.
Know what you own
Record who manages the domain, hosting account, website administrator access and paid licences. Keep renewal dates somewhere the business can reach. Your maintenance provider should explain which services are included and which renewals remain your responsibility.
Back up before making changes
Agree on a backup schedule that suits how often the site changes. Ask what is backed up, where the backup is stored and how restoration is checked. A backup plan needs a practical recovery process; merely seeing a backup button is not enough.
Review updates and compatibility
WordPress’s security handbook recommends keeping software current and using trusted sources. For a business site, plan changes with the theme, plugins and hosting environment in mind. Where a change is substantial, review it on a staging copy before applying it to the live site.
Test the routes to an enquiry
- Open the homepage and key service pages on a phone.
- Check call, email and WhatsApp links.
- Submit a clearly marked test enquiry and verify receipt.
- Review confirmation and error messages.
- Check important pages for missing images or unexpected layout changes.
Decide how faults will be reported and who will investigate them. A useful maintenance agreement states response arrangements, scope limits and how additional work is quoted. It should not leave a business owner guessing whether a broken form counts as support.
